Westech Energy New Zealand (Westech), a wholly owned subsidiary of Energy Corporation of America (ECA), today announced pre-spud operations had begun on the Albacore-1, an offshore exploratory well located approximately 50 km from the North Taranaki Coastline and approximately 70 km north of the City of New Plymouth, North Island, New Zealand. The well will be drilled as part of the work program for Petroleum Exploration Permit (PEP) 38491.
Westech Energy is now expecting to begin drilling its Albacore-1 offshore north Taranaki well in November with New Zealand Oil & Gas as a 40% partner. The Albacore-1 will be drilled by the Ensco 107 jackup rig, which has been successfully drilling production wells at the Maari oil field.

Just a week after winning a second term for its only offshore Taranaki licence, Energy Corporation of America is taking almost complete control of the permit ahead of drilling the promising Albacore-1 well.
